Share
Hi there, here’s your Weekly Catch Up for Waimate District, brought to you by Jean and Lyndsey at TackleShop General Store, broadcasting on Waimate WCR 87.7fm twice weekly, and we drop the transcript or recording into our Facebook group under Waitaki Angling and Outdoors, later in the week.
Here we go, heading into another duck opening day and a fine sunny clear day ahead typically favouring the ducks, oh well that’s par for the course really and it’s a long time since we had a rough weather opening day.
Let’s start as usual with the area tide times and best fishing times from Ocean Fun for the weekend ahead, why? Because you may as well go fishing this weekend.
Saturday 3rd:
High Tide 826am - Low tide at 247pm
Sunday 4th:
High Tide 929am- Low tide at 349pm
Best Fishing:
Saturday 523am and 551pm
Sunday 618am and 644pm
From my Met Office information on Tuesday, all looks rubbish till later in the week although Tuesday was supposed to be wet and it is bright and sunny. The weekend looks great as just mentioned so a good weekend to get out and about again.
The Waitaki flow is looking about average on Tuesday again at around 253 cumecs after a weekly high of around the same.
Do remember to keep your wits about you if near riverbeds especially Saturday morning due to duck opening day.
Righto, courtesy of a release from Fish and Game last week, here are the open and closed waters for the winter fishing activities in our district.
The following waterways are open all year long:
Lakes:
Tekapo, Pūkaki, Ohau, Benmore, Aviemore, Waitaki, Middleton, Ruataniwha, Wairepo Arm, Hood – although currently closed by Ashburton District Council until further notice due to algal bloom
Canals: Rangitata Diversion Race, Ohau (A, B & C), Pukaki, Tekapo – downstream of SH8 Bridge only,
Restricted “Winter Seasons”
The following rivers have a 3-month "winter season" from 1 June to 31 August, downstream of their respective State Highway 1 bridges:
Ashburton, Rangitata, Opihi, Waitaki
Lake Alexandrina has a 2-month “winter season” from 1 June to 31 July excluding brown trout.
Restricted “Shoulder Seasons”
These waterways have unique fishing seasons:
Lake Camp – remains open until 31 May.
Tekapo Canal, upstream of its State Highway 8 Bridge – remains open until 31 May, then reopens on 1 September.
OK there you are and there you have it, that’s this week’s quick catch up for you so in the interim, make best of your surroundings whether hunting, fishing, camping or boating and feel free to post pictures of your adventures on our Waitaki Angling and Outdoors page on Facebook, we’d love to see them!

This week, I pick again and I heard another song I really liked and would like to hear again, actually I remembered this one.
This one by another beautiful girl with an awesome vocal range. Alison Moyet had an absolute doppelganger in one of my former flatmates from back in the day when this song was hitting the charts. She could sing like Cindi Lauper and looked exactly like Moyet, what a hoot!
Alison Moyet came to prominence as a member of the synth-pop duo Yazoo but has since mainly worked as a solo artist.
My choice is a lovely example of her abilities, called, Is this Love from November 1986.
Fun fact: The song was written by Moyet and Dave Stewart of Eurythmics fame.
Pretty sure you will love this great sound to brighten up your day!
That's us so whatever you choose to do this weekend, keep safe from Jean and Lyndsey down here at TackleShop General Store, 70 Queen St, downtown Waimate, phone us on 03 6898400 or mobile 027 2214346 and remember to look us up on Facebook under TackleShop Waimate or Waitaki Angling and Outdoors for up-to-date releases etc.
Have a great week out there!
